Pearls are unlike any other gem. They are not carved from stone or forged in fire — they are born. Created within a living being, pearls are the only gemstones formed organically, carrying within them a lifeforce, a memory, and an energetic presence unlike anything else.
Formed Through Living Alchemy
Whether formed in freshwater or seawater, pearls develop over time as the mollusc gently coats an internal irritation — a grain of sand, a tiny parasite — in layer upon layer of nacre. This is not resistance. It is alchemy. An act of transmutation that takes months — sometimes years — to complete.
Natural pearls come in a breathtaking array of colours: rose, green, cream, silver/black, gold, lavender, and deep peacock grey. Some are entirely unique — their hues never to be repeated. In rare strands, it can take years to find a perfect match of tone, shape, and size. They are curated miracles.
Yet for so long, pearls were flattened into a symbol of tradition — associated with socialites, royals, or women who knew how to “behave.” But pearls were never meant to conform. Their very essence is transformation. Quiet, radical, feminine power.
“Pearls don’t distinguish between people. They reflect your light. They amplify it.”
A Tactile Experience
I remember my own pearl obsession vividly. When I rebranded in 2012, I went on a celebratory spree for my 50th: a gold South Sea strand, a white one, a full suite of earrings, rings and pendants. Gold pearls set with black diamonds. White South Sea strands laced with pink sapphires. Each piece a talisman of becoming. And now, working mostly from home, I miss that feeling — the warming of the pearl against my skin, the way it responds to my body, and how each one seems to come alive through wear.

Wearing pearls is a tactile, sensual experience. They don’t simply sit on you — they breathe with you. And there is a white pearl for every soul. From cool grey tones to soft creams and glowing blush, pearls don’t distinguish between people. They reflect your skin tone, your energy, your light.
As June’s birthstone, pearls are mid-year guides. They don’t push. They don’t rush. They simply remind you that what forms slowly — with grace and quiet resilience — is often the most lasting.
So if you are in a season of becoming, if you’re tired of striving or unsure of what’s next, let pearls hold you. Let them whisper: ‘There is power in softness. There is beauty in your in-between. You are already enough.’
