Everyday Jewellery Care
Cleaning your jewellery
Do not use any harsh or abrasive tools, chemicals, or very hot or cold water to clean your jewellery. Most gemstone jewellery can be safely cleaned at home using a very soft toothbrush, lukewarm water, and mild detergent. The exception is porous gems (like pearls) and strands. These should never be soaked. Pearls can absorb the water, and any minerals or chemicals in it, and the thread used in strands can swell and become more prone to breakage. Instead, these should gently be wiped with a soft cloth.
Wearing your jewellery
Jewellery can be damaged by extreme temperatures, chemicals, knocks, and certain light sources (like UV lights). To preserve the cleanliness, beauty, and integrity of your jewellery, it is important to remove your jewellery before —
- Doing any kind of heavy manual work.
- Participating in sport or going to the gym.
- Gardening, cleaning or doing the dishes.
- Having a shower, or putting on makeup and perfume.
- Receiving a manicure.
Storing your jewellery
Keep your jewellery stored in separate containers or compartments with soft lining. Pearl jewellery in particular can be vulnerable to scratches when rubbing up against other jewellery.
